Thank you for buying a Gillies and Mackay sectional timber building. We hope it will give you many years of good service. In order to help you achieve this we have outlined a few pointers on maintenance: -
A) Your building leaves our workshop with a base coat ONLY, of either Butinox No 1 or Sadolin Classic* translucent spirit based wood preservative (stated at the bottom of your invoice). If you have chosen an alternative timber preservative and we have applied it for you, then please follow the relevant manufacturers’ instructions. Please note that tanalised buildings have been pressure treated and not had Butinox or Sadolin painted on, but you can treat them with Butinox or Sadolin to avoid silvering if you wish . For optimum protection you should retreat your building within 3 weeks of it being erected. You will find your chosen colour and description at the bottom of your invoice.
Thereafter, you should continue to treat your building in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions, found on the tin. If in doubt phone the office on 01821 642 713; we will be more than happy to help. If changing brand or colour stick to spirit based treatments as others will rub off or flake. DO NOT APPLY A WATER-BASED TREATMENT OVER A SPIRIT BASED ONE.
B) You should not affix anything to the exterior of the building e.g., trellises, window boxes etc as these encourage localised damp spots.
C) Do not varnish inside of the building as this prevents the timber from breathing. If you wish to stain the inside of your build use Sadolin Classic or Butinox No1 or take advice from a reputable decorators’ merchant.
D) You should keep the area around the base of your building free from weeds and tall grass as these can conduct moisture to the wall panels.
E) Please prune overhanging tree branches and shrubs regularly in order to avoid abrasion to the roofing felt and walls.
F) Should damage to the felt occur, it must be rectified at the soonest possible opportunity.
G) The door should always be shut when not in use as failure to do so may result in the door warping or buckling.
H) Please be aware that wasps like wood. If they begin to form a byke, this will usually be found in the peak of the building, above the door. It can easily be treated using a proprietary spay such as ‘RAID’.
I) Please keep the building aired – particularly in the winter months, when it may not receive much use. This helps to prevent the build up of condensation.
REMEMBER wood is a natural product and will contract or expand in relation to the weather conditions. Roofing felt, although manmade, will behave likewise. Any timber building will deteriorate if not given the correct care and attention.
